02 Feb Enhancing Health and Well-being: The Power of Interior Design
In a world where the spaces we inhabit greatly impact our mental and physical wellbeing, the role of interior design has transcended mere aesthetics. It has become a powerful tool for promoting health and happiness in our lives. Undertaking a Masters degree in Interior Design for health and wellbeing, aligned with my career in wellness and an understanding on the transformative power these spaces hold, has not only provided me with valuable knowledge and skills but has also profoundly influenced the development of Folde + Sonder.
The decision to pursue a specialized degree in interior design for health and wellbeing stemmed from a deep-rooted passion to create spaces that nurture and uplift individuals. Throughout the course, I delved into various aspects of design psychology, environmental sustainability, ergonomic principles, and biophilic design. Each module enriched my understanding of how design can positively impact human health on multiple levels.
One of the most enlightening aspects of the program was studying how certain design elements can evoke specific emotions and behaviours, and how to harness this knowledge to create environments conducive to relaxation, productivity, and social interaction. Moreover, exploring the principles of biophilic design opened my eyes to the profound connection between humans and nature, and the transformative effects of integrating natural elements into built environments.
I began to envision how these principles could be applied in a familiar but unique project to authentically enhance the experience of our individuals within wellness spaces. This vision realised into Folde and Sonder – a journey to translate theory into practice.
From the moment you enter, the Studio’s design whispers of the natural world, with its use of natural timbers, earthy colour palette, and rhythmic arches evoking the organic beauty of the Sussex landscape. These elements form the very structure of the space, providing a sense of harmony and tranquillity that envelops guests as they step inside.
But it’s not just about aesthetics – every aspect of the Studio has been meticulously crafted to foster a profound connection with nature. Panoramic windows invite the outside in, bathing the interior with natural light and offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. These windows serve as a constant reminder of our inherent bond with the natural world, encouraging guests to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the beauty that surrounds them.
And it’s not only what you see that evokes a sense of biophilia – the Studio engages all the senses, from the soft textures of the fabrics to the subtle fragrances that fill the air, each element carefully chosen to evoke the essence of nature. It’s an immersive experience that invites guests to explore, engage, and ultimately find solace in the embrace of the natural world.
It is important to me that biophilic principles aren’t just a design choice – they’re an ethos of Folde + Sonder. By harnessing the restorative power of nature, the Studio will offer a sanctuary where guests can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and reconnect with what truly matters: the beauty, the serenity, and the boundless wonder of the world around us.
